Birding Information

This migration hotspot is an incredible place to witness waterbird migration from. The point sticks out into Lake Superior and from here you can watch waterfowl stream by on good migration dates. A wide variety of waterfowl, songbirds, and warblers can be seen at this scenic and historic landmark.

Take a moment and enjoy the Lake Superior shoreline on the accessible boardwalk equipped with benches. The boardwalk can be a great place to view songbirds like the blackburnian warbler. A spotting scope is especially useful at this location as the waterfowl can remain at great distances. Migrating waterfowl like red-necked grebes, scaup, mergansers and many others can be found here. Watch freighters go by on their way to the Soo Locks.

Area Information

The Point Iroquois name originates from a 1662 battle between the Ojibwa and Iroquois tribes. Point Iroquois Lighthouse was built in 1855 and marks the narrow channel at the mouth of the Saint Mary's River and Whitefish Bay. On your visit, climb 72 steps up the spiral staircase and enjoy the view from the 65-foot tower. You can learn about the lighthouse and area history inside the museum.

The gift shop offers choices of lighthouse souvenirs and interesting reading material. Point Iroquois Lighthouse is open from May 15 - October 15 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Nearby is the Monocle Lake Campground, which offers more opportunities for birding if you are looking to explore the area more.
