Eckerman Trout Pond

Trout Lake and Raco Area

Birding Information

This site was an old state fish hatchery along the east branch of the Tahquamenon River. Near the river, you might spot ruffed grouse feeding on the highbush cranberry. While having a picnic, you might hear the familiar 'teacher-teacher' of the ovenbird or the 'chebec' of the least flycatcher. Vireos, cape may warblers, and blackburnian warblers are often seen during migration resting in trees.

Area Information

The Eckerman Trout pond location was a Department of Conservation brook trout rearing facility from 1930 to 1958 and the remnants of this facility are still present at the stop including an artesian well, old trout rearing channels, an old dam structure and portions of a stone building.

The proximity and accessibility of the river make for a nice picnic spot using the picnic table on site. The East Branch of the Tahquamenon River in this area is a designated Type 1 Trout stream. Please refer to the Inland Trout and Salmon Stream Regulations in the current Michigan Fishing Guide.
